Bulldog Blast May 21, 2012

Welcome to this week's Bulldog Blast! What a great weekend! 16 days left in the school year and we have a ton to do!

Redland's Got Talent
This past Friday evening we hosted our annual Redland's Got Talent Variety Show and Dinner. It was a huge success featuring some amazing talent and our largest crowd yet! Congrats to all of the students who performed, they were fantastic.

Canned Food Drive
The 8 th grade would like to thank the entire student body, parents and staff at Redland for the most successful Food Drive we ever had. A total of 1859 food products were collected. Manna Food Center weighed our donation and we donated 1650 pounds of food. They said most schools donate around 150 pounds. This is the most food they have received this year. Awesome job!!!

DEAR Reading Support
Just a reminder that we are collecting books for our Drop Everything And Read program for the 2012 - 2013 school year. We are looking for support in building our classroom libraries for students to use when needed for DEAR time. Please contact Mrs. Brandt, Mrs. Young (Media Specialist), or Mrs. Roberge with any questions. Thank you so much to our generous community for the fantastic donations so far.

Middle School Transition Visits

This past week was a fantastic week for Redland Middle School and our future Bulldogs!

This year Redland Middle School tried a new approach to helping students transition from elementary school to middle school.  As we have worked with parents and students on the transition to middle school we continuously hear about how nervous they are (students & parents), how they are not sure what to expect, and of course about the concerns over what middle school is all about in general.  In talking with students, parents, and colleagues, Redland Middle School decided to host a half-day visit for our incoming Bulldogs.  The idea was to give 5th graders some insight into how middle school runs, let them experience middle school (and the Redland culture) and get the opportunity to ask current students any questions they may have about middle school life, through this opportunity we are hoping that students see just how great middle school is and turn their nervousness into excitement.

Over the span of three days this week Redland Middle School hosted about 175 future Bulldogs.  As the students arrived and they were greeted by administration, student leaders, and the yet to be named Redland Bulldog.  Incoming students were then treated to fantastic musical performances by our 6th grade band and strings classes as we got ready to kick off our program (Our musicians are amazing).

Students were then welcomed to the school by Mr. Sinclair and Kristina (SGA president) and were told about the plans and goals for the day.  Following the welcoming our future Bulldogs, guided by SGA members (thank you Jackie, Sammie, Sarah, Jonathan, Domenic and Bobbie) were able to spend time in current 6th grade classrooms.  Students were able to see how classes run and were able to get to know some of our 6th grade teachers and students.  After spending time in the classrooms students got to have a middle school lunch in the cafeteria.  Students learned about the differences between elementary and middle school lunches, how Redland Middle School runs lunch, and the new level of responsibility needed in middle school.

After lunch and some time outside students went on a tour of the building with our SGA members.  Students were able to see the different parts of the building, the features of the school, and were able to learn how simple Redland is to navigate.  The day concluded with students having the opportunity to ask our SGA students and staff questions about middle school life.

Students left with some great information including a confirmation of the courses they are registered for for next year as well as their summer math and summer reading packets.

The feedback we have received so far from the elementary schools has been positive.  We are hoping that this will help make the transition from elementary to middle school easier for our future Bulldogs and their families.  We want to thank our elementary schools for their assistance in making this happen, our staff for making the visits successful, and to our SGA students for being such amazing ambassadors for Redland.
